Bebas Fiskal Indonesia Exit Tax

Documents you need to bring With you for Bebas Fiskal

Since January 2009 Indonesia has finally implemented “Bebas Fiskal” - Free of Exit Tax when traveling abroad with the condition of the Indonesian traveler showing his/her tax ID (NPWP).

With the new regulation, Indonesia travelers can now travel overseas without having to pay the exit tax by showing their tax ID - NPWP. Those that have not a tax ID; are not able or are not willing to show their tax ID will have to pay an inflated Rp 2,500,000 fiskal (exit tax).

Before 2009, Indonesians have to pay an exit tax of Rp 1,000,000 whenever they depart from Indonesia airports apart from departing for countries like Malaysia and Thailand. The exemption is because of the “Indonesia - Malaysia - Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) agreement between the three countries since 1993.

The new regulation caused some commotions at airports and seaports as many Indonesians travelers who are unaware of the new regulation, were requested to pay Rp 2,500,000 for not having NPWP (tax ID) and not allowed to depart.

Many travelers were also unaware that this new regulation applies to IMT-GT countries like Malaysia and Thailand and were not prepared to have their NPWP for departure.

Moreover, it has also been reported that many faced the problem if their NPWP is less than 3 days old and are not allowed to use it for the Bebas Fiskal regulation causing travelers to have to pay the new Rp 2,500,000 fiskal. Some had to cancel their trip due to not having prepared enough cash.

Travel Tips for Indonesians

To ensure your smooth trip abroad and prevent excessive travel expenses, be prepared to have your NPWP ready (at least more than 3 days old) to show to the Fiskal Department at the airport. There are no forms to fill in, they will just make a photocopy of your NPWP for proof and you can now save the fiskal fee for all your travels.

If you bring your spouse and kids, since they have not NPWP/tax ID, remember to bring your marriage and family certificate (Kartu Keluarga) with you to show the fiskal department as well.
